Background

Digital Future was engaged to appoint a Director AI Governance & Transformation for aHamburg-based insurtech company operating a service-dominated architecture(SDA) platform for the insurance industry. The company is a joint venture backed by leading European insurers and one of Europe's largest insuranceg roups, combining the stability of established shareholders with the agility ofa scale-up. As client demand for compliant, trustworthy AI grew, the company decided to build a dedicated business line for AI governance and transformation, reporting directly to the Executive Board.

Challenge

The mandatetargeted one of the scarcest profiles in today's market: a leader who understands AI on a technical level, is fluent in insurance-specific regulation, and can sell. Most candidates bring two of these three strengthsbut rarely all three — deep AI expertise paired with insurance-industry credibility and the commercial instinct to build a business line from scratch, pitch to C-level clients, and grow revenue rather than simply execute projects.

Profile

The successful candidate combined a technical grounding in AI/ML, cloud, and data architectures with practical experience applying regulation such as the EU AIAct and GDPR in a compliance or risk context. Prior exposure to the insurance or financial services sector was essential to earn credibility quickly with client stakeholders. Just as important was a demonstrated ability to develop new offerings and close business — through pitching, proposal writing, and public visibility via conferences or whitepapers — rather than a purely advisory or academic profile.

Search Strategy

Given how few candidates cover all three dimensions, Digital Future ran a targeted market mapping across consulting firms, insurers, and technology-driven financial services companies, directly approaching senior professionals at the intersection of AI, risk, and client-facing business development. Assessment centered on verifying genuine commercial track record alongside technical and regulatory depth, and on fit with the company's remote-first, entrepreneurial ulture and shareholder environment.

Outcome

Digital Future delivered a shortlist within the agreed timeframe and supported the client through a confidential, structured selection process. The company appointed a Director AI Governance & Transformation who will build out the new business line, guide insurance clients through EU AI Act compliance, and establish the company as a trusted voice on Responsible AI in the European insurance market.
